Create Your First Survey
This guide walks you through creating a simple survey from scratch and getting your first responses.
Prerequisites
- A Told account with a team
- A source created (for in-app surveys)
Step 1: Create the survey
- Open your source from the dashboard
- Click New file → Survey
- Give your survey a name (e.g., "User satisfaction")
Step 2: Add questions
You're now in the survey editor. Add your questions:
- Click Add question
- Choose a question type:
- NPS — "How likely are you to recommend us?" (0-10 scale)
- Opinion Scale — Star or emoji rating (1-5)
- Multiple Choice — Pick from predefined options
- Open Text — Free-form text response
- Message — Display information without requiring a response
- Write your question text and description
- Configure options (mandatory, multiple selection, etc.)
- Repeat for each question you want to add
tip
Start with 2-3 questions maximum. Short surveys get significantly higher completion rates.
Step 3: Customize the look
Go to the Customization tab to match your brand:
- Color — Set the primary color for buttons and accents
- Cover — Add an image, GIF, or video at the top
- Avatar — Add a profile picture and name for a personal touch
- Position — Choose where the survey appears on screen (bottom-right, bottom-left, center, etc.)
- Close button — Allow or prevent users from dismissing the survey
Step 4: Set up triggers
Go to the Triggers tab to define when and where the survey appears:
- Page visit — Show on a specific URL or path
- Click on element — Show when users click a button, link, or element
- Custom event — Show when a custom event fires
- Period — Restrict to a date range
Configure display rules:
- Display only once — Show the survey only the first time conditions are met
- Reply only once — Let users see it again but not answer twice
Step 5: Publish
- Go to the Publish tab
- Toggle the survey to Active
- Your survey is now live and will appear to users matching your triggers
warning
Make sure the SDK is installed and initialized on your website before publishing. Use the Verify Installation button in your source settings to confirm.
Step 6: View results
Once responses start coming in, go to the Results tab to see:
- Response count and completion rate
- Individual answers per question
- NPS score breakdown (Detractors, Passives, Promoters)
- Export data as CSV
