Create a website survey

This guide describes how to create a new in-app survey on a website source. It only covers the creation step itself — editing questions, customization, triggers, publishing and results are documented in their own pages.

Prerequisites

Open the create flow

There are three entry points to start a new survey on a website source. They all lead to the same screen.

  • From the source home (/source/{sourceID}) — in the Get started panel, click Create under "Create your first survey"
  • From the Surveys list (sidebar Surveys) — click the New Survey button at the top right
  • From the Surveys empty state — click Create

You're redirected to the Templates screen (/source/{sourceID}/templates).

Step 1 — Pick a starting point

The Templates screen shows two kinds of cards:

  • Start from scratch"Begin with a blank slate and select your own questions"
  • Custom templates — any survey templates previously created within your team

For this guide we use Start from scratch. Click Create now on that card.

Step 2 — Set the default language

A modal opens: "Set the default language for your questionnaires".

"This language will be used by default. You can add or change other languages at any time."

Pick your default language from the dropdown. Told currently supports 19 languages, including:

  • Français, English, Español, Italiano, Deutsch, Nederlands, Português, Português Brasileiro, Türkçe, Українська, Polski, Română, Svenska, 한국어, 日本語, 中文 (简体), Русский, Dansk, Magyar

You can change the default language and add additional languages later from the survey editor.

Click Create to confirm.

Step 3 — You're in the editor

Told creates the survey and opens it in the editor (/survey/{surveyID}/edition/questions/new). At this point your survey:

  • Has an auto-generated name (New told) shown in the top-left textbox. Click on it to rename it inline at any time — you don't have to do it now.
  • Already includes a Welcome message and a Thank you message, both active by default. You can edit or disable them later.
  • Has no questions yet — the editor immediately invites you to add your first one.

What's next

The survey is created. The next thing to do is to add and configure your questions.
