Accessibility

Told surveys are designed to be accessible to all users, including those with disabilities or who rely on assistive technologies.

Built-in accessibility features

Responsive design

Surveys automatically adapt to the user's screen size and device:

  • Desktop — Displays as a positioned widget (corner, center, or full-screen)
  • Tablet — Adjusts layout for medium screens
  • Mobile — Full-width display at the bottom of the screen

Color customization

When choosing your survey's color scheme, ensure sufficient contrast between text and background. Told uses accessible default colors, but custom colors should be tested for contrast compliance.

Keyboard navigation

All survey elements are navigable via keyboard:

  • Tab to move between interactive elements
  • Enter or Space to select or submit
  • Escape to close the survey (when close button is enabled)

Accessible components

Survey UI components use semantic HTML and ARIA attributes:

  • Form inputs have proper labels
  • Buttons have descriptive text
  • Radio buttons and checkboxes are grouped correctly
  • Focus states are clearly visible

Flexible timing

Surveys don't have time limits by default. Users can take as long as they need to read and respond to questions. Trigger delays and display options respect user interaction pace.

Best practices

  • Test with keyboard only — Navigate your survey using only Tab, Enter, and Escape to ensure it's fully operable
  • Check color contrast — Use a contrast checker to verify your custom colors meet WCAG AA standards (minimum 4.5:1 ratio for text)
  • Write clear question text — Use simple, direct language that's easy to understand
  • Provide meaningful alt text — When adding cover images, ensure they have descriptive context
  • Don't rely on color alone — If using emoji or star ratings, ensure the scale is clear from labels, not just colors
